Gators, Part Deux!

DSC_6448 - Version 2 (1)

[UPDATE: For anyone having trouble viewing the SC player, here is a link to a Set of the sounds on SC: SoundCloud] It has been a busy season! Things are finally starting to calm down a bit around here, so the blogging should be a bit more consistent! About 9 months ago, the HartFX team headed over to Gatorland to try to get some gator sounds. We were able to get some jaw snaps, hissing, and some decent ambience - and we managed to feed a Rode Blimp to a hungry gator (most definitely not on purpose...). The sounds we ended up with weren't really anything exciting though - a bit of a let down (considering the work that went into getting … [Read more...]

Come on Irene

Pier Wave Dark

This past week, Hurricane Irene brushed up against the coast of Florida. There were a few small spin-off storms and whatnot, but it pretty much missed Florida altogether. I still wanted to head to the coast to try to record something though, so I packed up and jumped into the car with my recording buddy, Josh (Twitter: @JoshuaGladu), and we headed over to Cocoa Beach to see what it was like out there. We drove through some pretty nasty storms on the way out, but to our surprise, it wasn't even raining in Cocoa Beach when we got there. The sky even cleared up enough to see the sunset. I knew the waves were going to be pretty big, and I … [Read more...]

Hey! Leggo my Rode Blimp!

Gators Featured

A few days ago, the HartFX crew took a trip down to Gatorland. If you haven't been to Gatorland, you need to go sometime. It's totally awesome! Huge gators everywhere, plus a ton of other animals too. Very cool place, and the management there is just as awesome! We hooked up with Tim Williams, the "Dean of Gator Wrestlin' " (that's what his card says!), who is just about the nicest guy you could meet. He toured us all around the facility before hours (very nice of him!) and told us all about the gators. Tim started wrestlin' gators over 30 years ago! He now trains the other wrestlers at the park. The guy knows a lot about gators! So our … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Falls Park Recordings

Waterfall Featured

On the second full day of our trip, after we did the garage recordings and picked up our fireworks stash, we headed over to Downtown Greenville, where there you can find tons of waterfalls in Falls Park! We brought the same two packages as before - Johnny had a CSS-5, and I had an MKH60, and of course I brought my hydrophone! The layout of the park is pretty cool. At the top of the park, there is a large river that comes through Downtown Greenville. The river flows through a manmade waterway, and then goes over this cool manmade waterfall. We stopped at this waterfall first. It's one of those cool waterfalls where the water comes off … [Read more...]

Article on HartFX over at Track Time Audio

Screen shot 2011-04-19 at 11.29.18 AM

David from Track Time Audio recently interviewed Colin Hart from HartFX in an article called "Colin Hart on Bikes, Gaff Tape, and Loud Things" Check it out: Today I made Colin Hart of Hart FX think. TTA: First off, your recent Yamaha R1 bike article states that you were originally there to capture a power boat’s sounds, but weather shot that idea down, but that your host knew a guy who had a bike. Is a “guy who knows a guy who has a thing” a common way for you to acquire sounds? Many to most of my sounds are acquired that way. That’s how the whole trip to South Carolina came about. I knew a guy that knew some people that had … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Recording at The Garage

Garage

After we finished up recording Gareth's Yamaha R1, we all decided to go out for pizza and drinks. While we were sitting there talking about our plans for the week, Gareth mentioned that we should come by the transmission shop where he works. It sounded like a great idea. We planned everything out and then showed up around 11:45 the next morning. We timed it so that we would show up right before everyone went on lunch, so we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves. Pretty sweet! Johnny grabbed a stereo package (CSS-5 into a 744T) and I grabbed a mono package (MKH60 into a 744T) and we headed into the garage. We met up with Gareth, who … [Read more...]

Our 5-Day SFX Recording Road Trip Extravaganza!

Packed CarSm

Last week was a VERY productive week for us here at HartFX. I had a wonderful response to the 192k article I posted (thanks!), plus the HartFX crew (Johnny and I) took a 5-day road trip up to South Carolina to record an amazing amount of sound! We recorded vehicles, a mechanic's garage, tons of waterfalls, guns, and explosives, and now we have 3 new libraries on the way! Check them out here, and here. During the trip, we learned a ton and now we want to share our experiences with you! There is so much I could talk about, and I don't want to skimp on the details! So instead of writing one GIGANTIC article that covers everything but … [Read more...]

I’m on a boat!

Colin Boat

Last week, the HartFX crew (aka me and Johnny), spent the weekend recording boats in Sarasota. The first boat we recorded was a 2008 Sea Ray Sundancer 340. It has two T-VD-8.1 S Horizon MerCruiser DTS 370hp engines (loud!). We spent two days recording the boat. The first day we wired it all up and did a bunch of engine starts and stops, as well as revs and other engine sounds. The second day, Captain John Hart (my Pops!) took us out on the Sarasota Bay to get a bunch of different maneuvers and cruising speeds (and have lunch!). We did a whole bunch of different recordings, from Cub-01s in the engine room and a shotgun on the exhaust, to … [Read more...]

Mortars and Microphones

Explosion Web

About six months ago I purchased a ton of fireworks. Why? Because I like blowing things up. So combine that with a recorder and you have some awesome sounds. I never got around to actually using any of them until just last week, when I decided to bring a bunch of them out to a party at my friends house, which is in the middle of nowhere. While at the party, we found this long drainage pipe and started throwing bottle rockets down it. The sound was absolutely amazing, and I decided that I needed to record the resulting sound. So a few days later, I returned with an arsenal of rockets, firecrackers, and my favorite, mortars. Armed with a … [Read more...]
