Gators, Part Deux!

DSC_6448 - Version 2 (1)

[UPDATE: For anyone having trouble viewing the SC player, here is a link to a Set of the sounds on SC: SoundCloud] It has been a busy season! Things are finally starting to calm down a bit around here, so the blogging should be a bit more consistent! About 9 months ago, the HartFX team headed over to Gatorland to try to get some gator sounds. We were able to get some jaw snaps, hissing, and some decent ambience - and we managed to feed a Rode Blimp to a hungry gator (most definitely not on purpose...). The sounds we ended up with weren't really anything exciting though - a bit of a let down (considering the work that went into getting … [Read more...]

We're now on Challenge #13, and HartFX is sponsoring it, which means that if you win, you take home your very own copy of the Hart of Steel HD library! Extra, Extra, Read All About it!

Printer Closed Wide

A few weeks ago, I received notice that the current show I am working on was put on hold for a few weeks while they re-edit some things, which gave me a few weeks to record again! The day I received that news, I went right out and did this session: I recently noticed, while making copious amounts of collated, double sided, stapled photocopies (fancy machine!) in the office, that the new printer we have sounds really cool. So, as soon as I had a free evening, I grabbed a few mics, a recorder, and a few reams of paper, and started recording. Disclaimer: I did actually have a ton of copies that had to be made, so I didn't waste any paper... I … [Read more...]

Come on Irene

Pier Wave Dark

This past week, Hurricane Irene brushed up against the coast of Florida. There were a few small spin-off storms and whatnot, but it pretty much missed Florida altogether. I still wanted to head to the coast to try to record something though, so I packed up and jumped into the car with my recording buddy, Josh (Twitter: @JoshuaGladu), and we headed over to Cocoa Beach to see what it was like out there. We drove through some pretty nasty storms on the way out, but to our surprise, it wasn't even raining in Cocoa Beach when we got there. The sky even cleared up enough to see the sunset. I knew the waves were going to be pretty big, and I … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Explosives and Fireworks

FWKS Featured

Our last full day in South Carolina was a big one! This is the one we planned for. Explosives and guns! Let's talk about the explosives first. I've recorded explosions before, so I sort of knew what to expect. I also knew it was going to require a lot of planning if I was going to come out with anything worth using. The things I needed to consider were location, gear, and available ordinance. Also, I had to stay within my budget with all of this. First, I decided to find a location. The main reason we travelled to South Carolina was because of this location. We were given access to this huge farm that was in the middle of nowhere. It … [Read more...]

Article on HartFX over at Track Time Audio

Screen shot 2011-04-19 at 11.29.18 AM

David from Track Time Audio recently interviewed Colin Hart from HartFX in an article called "Colin Hart on Bikes, Gaff Tape, and Loud Things" Check it out: Today I made Colin Hart of Hart FX think. TTA: First off, your recent Yamaha R1 bike article states that you were originally there to capture a power boat’s sounds, but weather shot that idea down, but that your host knew a guy who had a bike. Is a “guy who knows a guy who has a thing” a common way for you to acquire sounds? Many to most of my sounds are acquired that way. That’s how the whole trip to South Carolina came about. I knew a guy that knew some people that had … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Recording the Yamaha R1

R1 Featured Image

Last Monday was our first full day in Greenville, SC. We didn't have many big plans that day, just location scouting, organizing gear, building rigs, and a few other housekeeping activities on the agenda. We were supposed to be recording a MasterCraft Ski Boat with a nearly 400hp Carbureted Ford V8 inboard engine on it, but the weather prevented that. As a consolation, Will, our host, mentioned that his good friend, Gareth, had a Yamaha R1 bike that we might be able to play around with. Having no other plans for the rest of the night, we jumped on it, and were soon meeting up with Gareth to record his R1. I've recorded bikes before, but … [Read more...]

AES-SF Day 1 – Seals, Submarines, Skywalker and Scotch

My first full day in SF was quite an eventful one. I met up with Shaun Farley (from Dynamic Interference) to head up to Skywalker Ranch for the MPSE Sound Panel. We had some time to kill, so we headed over to Pier 39 because he was told there were some Seals that hung out over there. We got there, and sure enough, there were a bunch! They made all sorts of crazy sounds! Shaun had his Sony D50 with him and I had my Olympus LS-10, so we grabbed some (contaminated) recordings. Too many people around - but it was fun nonetheless. (Side note - went back there Sunday night with Nick Meade with a 702 and MKH60 / 30 M/S rig and boom pole. Much better … [Read more...]

129th Annual AES Roundup

Wow! Tons of stuff going on this week! Big news from Avid, great stuff from many microphone companies, Izotope, and tons more! The AES trade show floor was considerably smaller than usual, but there was a lot of cool stuff there. If you spent some time digging and talking to reps, inventors, presidents, etc... there was a lot of cool info to be gathered. I did my best at grabbing pics and info about topics and products pertaining to audio post and field recording / production audio. I'll cover a lot of it here, but if there's something I don't cover that you're wondering about, feel free to ask me if I happened to come across what you're … [Read more...]
