Get Ready, Get Jet, BOOM!!!!!!!

NoF_Featured

You may remember last year when we went out to an event called "The Night of Fire" to record jet cars, but I forgot a cable? Well, we went back this year and grabbed some wicked recordings! The "Night of Fire" is an absolutely wonderful night where a bunch of Jet Car Drivers from across the country come together to show off what they've been working on - jet powered dragsters! First off, putting a jet engine inside a car is a crazy feat of engineering. These things are crazy powerful! The smaller cars had 6000+ horsepower, and the big rig (yes, a semi truck cab), has 18,000hp! Enough to propel the 4 ton beast to 209mph at the 1/4 mile. … [Read more...]

Extra, Extra, Read All About it!

Printer Closed Wide

A few weeks ago, I received notice that the current show I am working on was put on hold for a few weeks while they re-edit some things, which gave me a few weeks to record again! The day I received that news, I went right out and did this session: I recently noticed, while making copious amounts of collated, double sided, stapled photocopies (fancy machine!) in the office, that the new printer we have sounds really cool. So, as soon as I had a free evening, I grabbed a few mics, a recorder, and a few reams of paper, and started recording. Disclaimer: I did actually have a ton of copies that had to be made, so I didn't waste any paper... I … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Explosives and Fireworks

FWKS Featured

Our last full day in South Carolina was a big one! This is the one we planned for. Explosives and guns! Let's talk about the explosives first. I've recorded explosions before, so I sort of knew what to expect. I also knew it was going to require a lot of planning if I was going to come out with anything worth using. The things I needed to consider were location, gear, and available ordinance. Also, I had to stay within my budget with all of this. First, I decided to find a location. The main reason we travelled to South Carolina was because of this location. We were given access to this huge farm that was in the middle of nowhere. It … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Falls Park Recordings

Waterfall Featured

On the second full day of our trip, after we did the garage recordings and picked up our fireworks stash, we headed over to Downtown Greenville, where there you can find tons of waterfalls in Falls Park! We brought the same two packages as before - Johnny had a CSS-5, and I had an MKH60, and of course I brought my hydrophone! The layout of the park is pretty cool. At the top of the park, there is a large river that comes through Downtown Greenville. The river flows through a manmade waterway, and then goes over this cool manmade waterfall. We stopped at this waterfall first. It's one of those cool waterfalls where the water comes off … [Read more...]

Road Trip Special: Recording the Yamaha R1

R1 Featured Image

Last Monday was our first full day in Greenville, SC. We didn't have many big plans that day, just location scouting, organizing gear, building rigs, and a few other housekeeping activities on the agenda. We were supposed to be recording a MasterCraft Ski Boat with a nearly 400hp Carbureted Ford V8 inboard engine on it, but the weather prevented that. As a consolation, Will, our host, mentioned that his good friend, Gareth, had a Yamaha R1 bike that we might be able to play around with. Having no other plans for the rest of the night, we jumped on it, and were soon meeting up with Gareth to record his R1. I've recorded bikes before, but … [Read more...]

Our 5-Day SFX Recording Road Trip Extravaganza!

Packed CarSm

Last week was a VERY productive week for us here at HartFX. I had a wonderful response to the 192k article I posted (thanks!), plus the HartFX crew (Johnny and I) took a 5-day road trip up to South Carolina to record an amazing amount of sound! We recorded vehicles, a mechanic's garage, tons of waterfalls, guns, and explosives, and now we have 3 new libraries on the way! Check them out here, and here. During the trip, we learned a ton and now we want to share our experiences with you! There is so much I could talk about, and I don't want to skimp on the details! So instead of writing one GIGANTIC article that covers everything but … [Read more...]

I’m on a boat!

Colin Boat

Last week, the HartFX crew (aka me and Johnny), spent the weekend recording boats in Sarasota. The first boat we recorded was a 2008 Sea Ray Sundancer 340. It has two T-VD-8.1 S Horizon MerCruiser DTS 370hp engines (loud!). We spent two days recording the boat. The first day we wired it all up and did a bunch of engine starts and stops, as well as revs and other engine sounds. The second day, Captain John Hart (my Pops!) took us out on the Sarasota Bay to get a bunch of different maneuvers and cruising speeds (and have lunch!). We did a whole bunch of different recordings, from Cub-01s in the engine room and a shotgun on the exhaust, to … [Read more...]

New Library Coming Soon: LFE Effects

Rumble2

So it's been a good few months since I've released a library. I am planning the release of 3 - 4 more by the end of the summer - so keep your eyes out! The first one that will be released (hopefully by the end of May) is a collection of high resolution LFE effects. The library will be called... drumroll please... "My Hart Resonates!" I enjoyed that :-) These aren't your simple synthesized LFEs. These are all real sounds, in real environments! Here's a taste of what I mean: (you'll need a sub or good headphones for this one!) In the demo above, everything is recorded with an Aquarian H2a hydrophone (sometimes with … [Read more...]

A Whole New World! Exploring with a Hydrophone

Hydrophone New Pass

About a month ago, I finally (after a year of deliberating) bought an Aquarian H2a Hydrophone. I love it! Very cool mic. As you may know, I've been playing with hydrophones for about 2 years now - most of which I've made by myself - with mixed results. This mic is lightyears better than what I've been using! So Johnny and I set out to find some cool things to record last week. We headed up Longboat Key, and ended up stopping at the park by the draw bridge at New Pass. I threw the hydrophone all the way out and let it settle, then started recording. The Gulf was definitely alive that evening! Depth charts estimate the water to be between … [Read more...]

Merry Christmas from New York City!

IMG_1174

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Every year, I get the privilege of spending Christmas in New York City, a place where Christmas is spent well! I wanted to share a little bit of my experience with all of you this year, so I went around and recorded a few New York City Winter scenes in binaural so you can experience it with me! Every year, Saks Fifth Avenue puts on a huge show on the front of their building. In case you don't know, Saks is directly across from Rockafeller Center. So if you stand at the front door of saks and look straight out, you see this: Now, if you stand in Rockafeller Center and look at Saks, normally you just see … [Read more...]
